PEERS® Social Skills

The Social Skills Program Our Community’s Been Waiting For!

At ADHD Support Australia, one of the most common questions I’m asked is whether I can recommend a high-quality, evidence-based social skills program for neurodivergent teens and young adults.

After years of searching for a program that truly aligned with neurodivergent needs — including for my own daughter — I discovered the PEERS® Program.

PEERS® is practical, evidence-based and designed to make social expectations explicit and learnable.

Seeing the impact it can have on confidence, connection and everyday life is why I chose to bring the program online, making it more accessible to our community than ever before.

Why I Offer the PEERS® Social Skills Program

I’m Vivian Dunstan, Founder of ADHD Support Australia, and for many years one of the most common questions parents have asked me is whether I can recommend a social skills program that truly supports neurodivergent teens and young adults.

As both a professional and a parent, this question has always mattered deeply to me. For a long time, I couldn’t find a program that felt genuinely suitable — including for my own daughter — and until 2019, I didn’t have an answer I felt confident offering families.

I understand how painful it is to watch your child struggle with friendships and social connection, especially when you want to help but don’t know where to turn. That sense of helplessness can be heartbreaking for parents and young people alike.

When I first learned about the PEERS® Program, I invited Beverley from Definition Diverse to speak at one of our community events in December 2018, to explain how neurodivergent teens and young adults — including those with ADHD and autism — can benefit from explicit, evidence-based social skills support.

I was so impressed by the program’s respectful, practical approach that in January 2019 I completed the PEERS® Young Adult Program provider training with its creator, Dr Elizabeth Laugeson, and became a certified provider.

In early 2020, I went on to complete the certified PEERS® Adolescent Program provider training as well.

Inspired by the program’s impact and guided by the needs of our community, I created an online PEERS® Social Skills Program for neurodivergent teens and young adults — making this evidence-based support more accessible to families across Australia and beyond and I’m incredibly proud to offer this program through ADHD Support Australia.

Benefits of Social Skills Support

Many neurodivergent children experience the social world differently. When social expectations are unclear or unspoken, navigating friendships and peer interactions can feel confusing or overwhelming — which can contribute to social anxiety and withdrawal.

Even subtle social misunderstandings can affect peer relationships over time. With the right support, social skills help children and teens build connection, maintain friendships and feel more confident engaging with others.

There’s no need to label a child as “socially awkward.” Often, they simply haven’t been given the opportunity to learn social expectations in a clear, explicit and supportive way.

While some children pick up social skills through observation, many neurodivergent kids benefit from direct teaching and guided practice.

That’s exactly what PEERS® provides — making social expectations visible, practical and learnable.

Social skills aren’t about changing who someone is. They’re about learning practical tools and patterns for navigating social situations — skills that can be learned, practised and strengthened over time.

Social Skills Support Matters for Neurodivergent Teens and Young Adults

When social expectations aren’t made clear or taught directly, many teens and young adults — particularly those with ADHD, autism or other neurodivergent profiles — may find it harder to:

  • Build and sustain meaningful peer relationships and friendships

  • Feel socially confident, included and understood, which can impact emotional wellbeing

  • Navigate further education, employment, dating and adult relationships

Social Skills to Support Lifelong Connection and Wellbeing

Developing the skills to build and maintain even one or two meaningful friendships can support teens and young adults to:

  • Build resilience and cope more effectively with life’s challenges
  • Adjust more confidently over time, including during major life transitions
  • Strengthen self-esteem, confidence and independence
  • Reduce vulnerability to bullying or social exclusion
  • Support emotional wellbeing by reducing loneliness, anxiety and low mood

Meet Your PEERS Social Skills Program Provider– Vivian Dunstan

My journey as a parent of a neurodivergent child showed me just how limited accessible, affirming support can be — and inspired me to create what I couldn’t find.

Raising my daughter highlighted gaps in ADHD understanding, practical support and community connection. Rather than accepting those gaps, I took action — beginning with a small local support group that has since evolved into a national hub supporting families across Australia.

Along the way, I’ve gained experience in many roles and perspectives, including:
